Mediterranean Phytophthora, scientifically known as Phytophthora mediterranea, is a severe plant pathogen belonging to the oomycete class. This organism primarily targets woody species, causing significant root rot and crown dieback, which is recognized as a major threat to forest health in Mediterranean climate zones.

The host range is predominantly focused on the genus Quercus, including the cork oak. The pathogen acts as a silent killer by gradually destroying the root system, which prevents the host from efficiently absorbing water and essential nutrients, leading to a slow but inevitable decline of the tree health.

Clinical symptoms include leaf yellowing (chlorosis), wilting, and the eventual thinning of the canopy. Bark necrosis near the root collar is a critical diagnostic sign. In advanced stages, one may observe stem lesions accompanied by sap exudation, which indicates that the infection has compromised the vascular integrity of the tree.

The development of the disease is strictly dependent on soil moisture levels. Phytophthora mediterranea thrives in waterlogged conditions where motile zoospores can easily traverse the soil matrix to find new roots. Human activity, such as moving contaminated soil or infected nursery stock, is the primary vector for long-distance spread.
