Phytophthora megasperma is a soil-borne oomycete pathogen known for causing severe root and stem rot in various agricultural crops. As a water-loving pathogen, it poses a significant threat to agricultural productivity worldwide, particularly in poorly drained environments.

The host range is broad, but it is economically most significant in soybeans, alfalfa, and several horticultural species. The pathogen survives in the soil as oospores, which can remain viable for many years until environmental conditions trigger their germination.

Symptoms typically manifest as chlorosis (yellowing) of the leaves, wilting, and stunted plant growth. Below the soil line, the root system shows signs of rot, often turning brown or black, and the decay may extend upward into the lower stem, causing a characteristic dark lesion.

The development of the disease is strictly dependent on soil moisture. High levels of soil saturation facilitate the movement of zoospores through the soil water film, allowing the pathogen to locate and infect host roots efficiently. Cool, wet springs are particularly conducive to early-season epidemics.

Effective disease management requires an integrated approach. Farmers should prioritize the use of resistant crop cultivars, ensure fields are well-drained, and practice crop rotation with non-host species. Additionally, the application of seed treatments containing specialized fungicides is essential for reducing initial infection pressure.
