Description

The causative agent of the disease is the oomycete Phytophthora melonis. This pathogen is a devastating fungus-like organism that targets various vegetable crops, primarily within the Cucurbitaceae family, leading to rapid tissue decay and plant collapse under favorable environmental conditions.

The host range includes economically significant crops such as cucumbers, melons, watermelons, squash, and pumpkins. The pathogen is highly virulent and can cause severe damage in both greenhouse environments and open-field agricultural production, often leading to total loss of individual plants or patches.

Symptoms typically manifest as water-soaked lesions on leaves and stems, accompanied by wilting that progresses rapidly. A characteristic sign is the necrosis of the crown or root collar, which turns dark brown and becomes soft. Fruits that come into contact with contaminated soil develop firm, dark, water-soaked spots that quickly evolve into white, fuzzy mold.

The development of Phytophthora melonis is strictly dependent on moisture levels. High humidity, saturated soil conditions, and temperatures ranging from 20°C to 25°C create ideal conditions for the production and dispersal of zoospores, which can move through irrigation water or rainwater splashing.

Effective management requires an integrated approach:

  • Improving soil drainage to prevent waterlogging.
  • Implementing strict crop rotation protocols to avoid pathogen build-up in the soil.
  • Removing and destroying infected plant debris immediately to minimize inoculum levels.
  • Applying authorized fungicides such as metalaxyl or copper-based compounds as part of a proactive spray program.
