Phytophthora mirabilis is a specific species of oomycete responsible for causing blight in Mirabilis jalapa, commonly known as the four-o'clock flower. As a specialized pathogen, it disrupts the physiological processes of the host plant, leading to rapid tissue degradation and systemic infection.
The primary host for this organism is Mirabilis jalapa. The disease affects all aerial components, including foliage, stems, and flower buds. In severe cases, the infection can spread throughout the entire plant, causing total collapse and death of the ornamental specimen.
Early symptoms are characterized by dark, water-soaked lesions appearing on the leaves and stems. Under high humidity conditions, a white, mold-like growth may emerge on these lesions, representing the sporulation phase of the pathogen. As the disease progresses, these areas become necrotic, leading to leaf drop and stem dieback.
The development and spread of Phytophthora mirabilis are heavily influenced by environmental factors. Cool to moderate temperatures combined with high relative humidity or frequent rainfall provide optimal conditions for the production and dispersal of zoospores, which can easily spread to neighboring healthy plants.
Management and prevention require a multi-faceted approach. Cultural practices such as thinning plants to improve air circulation and avoiding overhead irrigation are essential. If symptoms appear, immediate removal of infected plant parts is mandatory. Applying appropriate fungicides and maintaining strict hygiene in the planting area can help mitigate the impact of the disease.
