Often referred to as a water mold, this organism is a major threat to agricultural and ornamental plant health, primarily targeting the root systems and crowns. It causes a progressive decline that leads to the eventual collapse of the host plant.

The host range of Phytophthora mississippiae includes various plants that are susceptible to root-infecting pathogens. By attacking the vascular tissue of the roots, the organism effectively cuts off the plant's supply of nutrients and water, leading to symptoms that mirror drought stress despite adequate irrigation.

Primary signs and symptoms of infection include chlorosis (yellowing of foliage), sudden wilting, and overall stunted growth.
