Description
Pathogen and disease type. Phytophthora novae-guineae is a devastating oomycete pathogen responsible for causing a specific form of black pod rot. As an oomycete, it acts as a highly specialized plant parasite, capable of infecting various plant tissues and leading to significant tissue necrosis and crop destruction if left unmanaged.
Host plants. The primary agricultural host for this pathogen is the cacao tree (Theobroma cacao). Identified initially in Papua New Guinea, this disease has become a major limiting factor for sustainable cocoa production in that region. The pathogen's host range is often studied to prevent potential cross-contamination with other related tropical tree species.
Symptoms and signs. The disease is characterized by the appearance of dark, water-soaked lesions on the pods. As the infection progresses, these lesions expand rapidly, and the fruit surface becomes covered with a white, powdery fungal-like growth. Eventually, the infected pods turn black, shrivel, and undergo decay, becoming completely unusable for commercial processing.
Conditions for development and spread. The spread of Phytophthora novae-guineae is highly dependent on environmental factors, specifically high humidity, frequent rainfall, and warm temperatures. Spores (zoospores) are motile in water films, allowing them to travel easily through rain splashes, wind-blown droplets, and contaminated agricultural tools used during the harvesting process.
Harmfulness and protection measures. This disease is highly destructive, capable of wiping out a substantial portion of the cocoa harvest in vulnerable plantations. To mitigate losses, producers must implement a strict integrated pest management (IPM) strategy, which includes:
- Regular pruning to improve air circulation and sunlight penetration within the canopy.
- Frequent sanitation by removing and burying infected pods to eliminate inoculum sources.
- Judicious application of copper-based fungicides when environmental conditions favor disease outbreaks.
- Strict hygiene protocols for field workers to prevent mechanical transmission of the pathogen.
