Description
The pathogen Phytophthora oleae is an oomycete responsible for severe root rot and crown rot diseases in olive plantations. As a soil-borne pathogen, it specializes in attacking the root system and the lower trunk, significantly impairing the tree's ability to absorb water and essential nutrients from the soil.
The primary host for this disease is the olive tree (Olea europaea). The pathogen poses a significant threat to all stages of olive development, with young trees in nurseries and newly established orchards being particularly vulnerable to the initial infection and subsequent rapid spread of the disease.
Common symptoms include chlorosis (yellowing of the leaves), premature leaf drop, and overall canopy decline. A diagnostic feature is the presence of brown, necrotic lesions on the roots and the collar area. When the bark is peeled back, the underlying tissue exhibits a distinct dark discoloration, which is a hallmark of this Phytophthora-induced decay.
Disease development is heavily influenced by environmental factors, particularly soil moisture levels. Phytophthora oleae thrives in poorly drained soils and during periods of high rainfall where water stagnation occurs. The motile zoospores can travel through the water film in the soil, effectively colonizing adjacent healthy roots and spreading the infection across the field.
The economic impact of the disease is substantial, often leading to tree mortality and long-term yield reduction. Management strategies must be proactive and focus on cultural practices. Key steps include ensuring excellent soil drainage, avoiding excessive irrigation, and monitoring for early signs of tree decline. Chemical control using fungicides, such as metalaxyl or fosetyl-aluminum, is often integrated into management programs to suppress the pathogen and protect vulnerable root systems.
