Description
The causative agent of this disease is the oomycete Phytophthora phaseoli, which is a highly specialized pathogen affecting various species of beans. It is recognized as one of the most destructive diseases for snap beans, especially in regions with consistent moisture and moderate temperatures.
The disease primarily attacks the common bean. All above-ground parts of the plant can be affected, but the pathogen is particularly devastating when it infects the floral parts and developing pods. This leads to severe yield losses, as the pods become stunted, misshapen, and entirely unmarketable.
The most characteristic symptom is the formation of a dense, white, felt-like mold that covers the pods, leaves, and stems. On the pods, this mold causes the tissue to shrink and turn brown or black as the infection progresses. Flower clusters may wither and drop prematurely if the pathogen colonizes the peduncles.
The development of Phytophthora phaseoli is highly dependent on environmental conditions, particularly high humidity and rainfall. The zoospores are disseminated by splashing water, rain, and wind. The pathogen persists in the soil and on crop debris, making it a persistent threat in areas where beans are cultivated frequently.
Management strategies focus on integrated pest management practices. Growers should prioritize the use of resistant cultivars and adhere to strict crop rotation cycles, avoiding host crops for several years. Chemical control involves the application of fungicides, particularly those effective against oomycetes, starting from the onset of flowering when conditions are conducive to disease development.
