The causative agent of this disease is the oomycete Phytophthora pinifolia, belonging to the genus Phytophthora. This is a destructive pathogen that specifically targets coniferous species, most notably the radiata pine (Pinus radiata). The disease triggers rapid needle blight and can cause the death of young trees within a very short period.

The primary host affected by this pathogen is the radiata pine, which is widely cultivated in industrial plantations. The disease is particularly aggressive in regions with temperate, humid climates, where environmental conditions support the production and dispersal of oomycete zoospores in surface water films.

Symptoms of the infection include rapid browning and shedding of needles, starting from the older foliage. This is followed by necrosis of branches and the entire crown. A key diagnostic feature is the presence of distinct brown lesions on the needles, which eventually coalesce and cover the entire needle surface, leading to severe defoliation of the tree.

The development of the pathogen is favored by high humidity, frequent rainfall, persistent fog, and moderate temperatures. Zoospores are dispersed by wind and rain splash, infecting healthy trees from existing sources of inoculum. Outbreaks are most frequent during prolonged rainy seasons, which shorten the incubation period of the pathogen significantly.
