Description

The disease is caused by the oomycete Phytophthora pluvialis, a soil-borne pathogen known for causing significant damage to various tree species. It acts as an aggressive primary pathogen in forest ecosystems and commercial nurseries alike.

Primary host plants include several species of conifers, most notably Douglas-fir, radiata pine, and western hemlock. The pathogen attacks the cambium and needles, leading to internal degradation of the plant's vascular system.

Symptoms of an infection include needle yellowing, premature needle drop, and the formation of resinous lesions (cankers) on stems and branches. In severe cases, the tree exhibits canopy thinning and dieback of the leading shoots, which often results in tree mortality.

The spread of the pathogen is heavily dependent on moisture. Heavy rainfall events provide the necessary conditions for the production and dispersal of zoospores, which can travel through water runoff or splash to infect healthy foliage and stems.

Management of Phytophthora pluvialis relies on integrated forest protection practices. These include:

  • Strict quarantine regulations for timber and plant trade.
  • Sanitation protocols in nurseries to prevent soil movement.
  • Regular monitoring and removal of infected plant material.
