Description
The disease is caused by the oomycete Phytophthora podocarpi, a serious soil-borne pathogen. It specifically targets the root system of host plants, severely impairing the uptake of water and nutrients, which eventually leads to the wilting and death of the entire plant.
The primary host for this pathogen is the Podocarpus genus. It is particularly problematic in nurseries where plants are grown in containers, as the close proximity of plants and shared water sources facilitate the rapid spread of zoospores throughout the cultivation area.
Symptoms often manifest as a decline in overall plant vigor, followed by yellowing or browning of the needles. In advanced stages, the root system shows significant necrosis, where the fine roots are destroyed and the primary roots display dark, water-soaked lesions that smell of rot.
The development of the disease is highly dependent on environmental conditions, particularly high moisture levels and poorly drained soil. These conditions provide an ideal environment for the mobility and infection cycle of Phytophthora zoospores, allowing the pathogen to persist in the soil for extended periods.
The harmful impact is substantial, as the disease is often detected too late for effective treatment. Management strategies focus on strict sanitation, the use of well-draining potting media, and the application of fungicides such as metalaxyl or fosetyl-aluminum, which are effective in inhibiting the growth of oomycetes.
