Description
Phytophthora porri is a destructive oomycete pathogen responsible for blight and root rot in various allium species. This disease can cause significant economic losses by damaging both the vegetative parts and the bulbs of plants. Being a soil-borne pathogen, it requires specialized management strategies to minimize its prevalence in agricultural production fields.
This pathogen primarily targets onions, leeks, shallots, and garlic. Infections often occur in fields with poor drainage or where the crop is grown continuously without proper rotation. The pathogen survives in the soil through oospores, which are highly resilient structures capable of persisting in the environment for several seasons until suitable host plants are available.
Symptoms initially appear as water-soaked lesions on the lower leaves, which eventually turn pale yellow or brown. As the infection progresses, a white, moldy growth may be observed on the leaf surfaces during periods of high humidity. The neck and bulb tissues soften and begin to decay, often resulting in a foul-smelling rot that renders the crop entirely unmarketable.
Development and spread are favored by cool, wet conditions, particularly temperatures between 10°C and 15°C. Water splashes from rainfall or irrigation serve as the primary vector for spore dispersal. In saturated soil conditions, the pathogen thrives, aggressively colonizing root systems and spreading throughout the root zone to neighboring plants.
Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential to combat Phytophthora porri effectively. Growers should prioritize the following actions:
- Implement a long-term crop rotation strategy to break the pathogen lifecycle.
- Improve soil drainage and avoid overhead irrigation during humid weather.
- Sanitize farming equipment to prevent the transfer of infested soil.
- Apply registered fungicides preventively if conditions are favorable for blight development.
- Destroy all infected crop residues to prevent the buildup of inoculum in the soil.
