The causative agent of this disease is the oomycete Phytophthora primulae, a destructive pathogen that specifically targets various primrose species. This infection is a severe form of root rot, which typically attacks the root system and crown of the plant, often leading to rapid systemic collapse and death of the host.

The disease primarily affects plants within the genus Primula, which are frequently grown in pots or garden beds. Highly susceptible plants often include those kept in environments where hygiene standards are poorly maintained or where the substrate remains consistently damp, creating an ideal reservoir for the pathogen.

Symptomatology involves general wilting of the foliage, followed by chlorosis and necrosis of the leaves. A key diagnostic feature is the browning and eventual softening of the root crown. Roots themselves undergo severe decay, becoming mushy and dark, which inhibits the plant's ability to uptake water and nutrients from the soil.

Disease development is heavily influenced by environmental factors such as poor soil drainage, high relative humidity, and warm temperatures. Phytophthora primulae produces motile zoospores that migrate through saturated soil or irrigation water, allowing the fungus to spread rapidly among closely spaced containers or garden patches.

Management strategies focus on strict sanitation and the use of well-drained growing media. Preventive measures include ensuring adequate spacing for airflow and avoiding overhead irrigation that leaves the crown wet for extended periods. If infection occurs, affected plants should be removed, and the remaining ones should be treated with appropriate systemic fungicides, such as those containing metalaxyl, to curb the spread of the pathogen.
