Description
Pathogen and disease type. The disease is caused by Phytophthora quercetorum, a soil-borne oomycete. This pathogen is a serious threat to woody plants, acting as a primary agent of root rot. Unlike typical fungi, this organism thrives in aquatic environments and moisture-rich soils, systematically attacking the root system and depriving the host plant of essential water and nutrients.
Host plants. The primary hosts are species of the Quercus genus (oaks). It is frequently found in both forest ecosystems and commercial nurseries. The susceptibility of oaks to Phytophthora quercetorum can vary depending on soil conditions and the overall health of the forest stand, making it a critical concern for forest managers and arborists.
Symptoms and signs. Infected trees often exhibit a decline in canopy health, characterized by leaf chlorosis, thinning of the foliage, and dieback of twigs. On the stem base, one might notice bark lesions or bleeding cankers. The most definitive sign is found underground: the root system shows significant decay, discoloration of the root tips, and a lack of fine absorbing roots, which eventually leads to the tree's collapse.
Development and spread. The development of Phytophthora quercetorum is heavily dependent on wet soil conditions. The pathogen produces zoospores that swim through soil water to infect host roots. Spread is facilitated by movement of infested soil, contaminated equipment, nursery stock, and surface runoff, especially after heavy rains or flooding events that saturate the soil profile.
Damage and control measures. This disease causes significant economic loss and ecological damage, leading to stunted growth and premature mortality. Management is difficult once an area is infested, so prevention is key:
- Ensure only healthy, certified disease-free nursery stock is used for reforestation.
- Improve site drainage to prevent waterlogging, which creates optimal conditions for the pathogen.
- Implement strict sanitation protocols for equipment when moving between different forest plots.
- Regularly monitor forest health to detect early symptoms and remove severely affected trees to reduce the inoculum load.
