The causative agent of this disease is the oomycete Phytophthora quercina, a soil-borne pathogen that primarily attacks the root systems of various oak species. It is widely recognized as a major contributor to the widespread oak decline observed across European forest ecosystems.

The pathogen specifically targets members of the genus Quercus, including pedunculate and sessile oaks. It is particularly problematic in forest nurseries and young plantations where the infection can spread rapidly through crowded plant densities and shared soil environments.

Symptoms of the disease are characterized by chlorosis, premature leaf shedding, and reduced leaf size. As the infection progresses, branches begin to die back starting from the tips, and the root system shows signs of necrosis, specifically in fine feeder roots and the cambium layer near the root collar.

Development of Phytophthora quercina is highly dependent on environmental conditions, particularly high soil moisture and warm temperatures. The pathogen survives in the soil through oospores and spreads through contaminated water runoff, nursery tools, and the movement of infected nursery stock across different regions.

Due to the difficulty of curing infected trees, primary defense strategies focus on prevention and integrated pest management. Key measures include maintaining optimal soil drainage, ensuring the use of certified disease-free seedlings, implementing strict nursery hygiene, and monitoring forest stands for early signs of canopy decline.
