Phytophthora ramorum

Description

The causative agent of this disease is the oomycete Phytophthora ramorum. It is a highly destructive pathogen known primarily for causing Sudden Oak Death (SOD) in forests, as well as extensive blight in nursery-grown ornamental trees and shrubs.

The pathogen has a wide host range, infecting over 100 plant species. Key hosts include oaks (Quercus), beeches (Fagus), rhododendrons, camellias, and viburnums. Nursery stock often serves as a reservoir, allowing the disease to spread to new geographic areas through commercial trade.

Symptoms are diverse depending on the host: on broadleaf plants, they manifest as dark leaf spots and twig dieback. On susceptible trees, the pathogen creates large, bleeding cankers on the main trunk. These cankers interrupt the flow of water and nutrients, leading to yellowing of the canopy and eventual death of the tree.

The development of the disease is highly dependent on environmental factors, specifically cool, wet, and humid conditions. The motile zoospores produced by the pathogen require moisture to swim and infect new tissue. Once established, the disease can spread rapidly through rain splash and wind-driven water droplets.

Management of Phytophthora ramorum focuses on early detection and containment. Control measures include:

  • Strict implementation of phytosanitary regulations for all nursery movements.
  • Regular inspection of plants for early signs of lesions or cankers.
  • Proper disposal of infected material, typically via incineration or deep burial.
  • Application of preventative fungicides in high-risk areas to protect valuable specimens.
