Causal agent and disease type: Phytophthora root rot is caused by the oomycete Phytophthora rosacearum. This pathogen is a soil-borne organism that primarily attacks the root system and the crown of the host plant. The pathogen persists in the environment by forming resistant oospores, which allow it to survive in the soil for extended periods even in the absence of host tissues.

Host range: As implied by its name, this pathogen specializes in members of the Rosaceae family. Roses are the most common hosts, with the disease causing significant losses in nurseries and rose gardens. Other closely related ornamental shrubs or orchard trees in the rose family may also become susceptible under specific environmental conditions.

Symptoms and signs: Infected plants often exhibit symptoms similar to drought or nutrient deficiency, including yellowing leaves, wilting, and stunted growth. The most diagnostic sign is found at the crown and root level, where dark, sunken lesions appear. The root system eventually disintegrates, becoming dark, mushy, and devoid of the healthy white feeder roots necessary for nutrient uptake.

Conditions for development: Disease progression is heavily dependent on moisture. Phytophthora rosacearum thrives in waterlogged or poorly drained soils, as these conditions facilitate the production and dispersal of zoospores. Cool to moderate soil temperatures combined with high moisture levels are highly conducive to successful infection and rapid colonization of the plant's vascular tissues.

Harmfulness and protection measures: The disease is highly destructive because it targets the roots, often killing the plant before the grower detects the problem.

  • Improve soil drainage to prevent saturated conditions in the root zone.
  • Apply preventative fungicidal treatments to the soil around the base of the plant.
  • Sanitize all gardening tools to avoid spreading contaminated soil.
  • Prioritize the use of disease-free propagation material from reputable sources.
  • Remove and safely destroy infected plants to prevent the spread of the pathogen to neighboring shrubs.
