Description

Phytophthora sansomeana is a soil-borne oomycete pathogen that causes root and stem rot in a variety of crops, most notably soybean and corn. It is a highly persistent pathogen capable of producing thick-walled oospores that can survive in the soil for years, making it a challenging threat for agricultural production worldwide.

The host range of Phytophthora sansomeana includes major row crops, which complicates traditional crop rotation practices. Unlike some other species of Phytophthora, this pathogen effectively survives on corn roots, serving as a reservoir that can severely impact subsequent soybean plantings in the same field.

Symptoms of the disease usually include stunted growth, chlorosis of the lower leaves, and progressive wilting. Upon closer inspection, the root systems exhibit brown, necrotic lesions and significant tissue decay. In severe cases, the taproot is completely destroyed, and the lesion can extend upwards into the stem, leading to the rapid collapse of the plant.

Environmental conditions, particularly soil saturation, are critical for the development and spread of the pathogen. The zoospores of Phytophthora sansomeana require free water in the soil to swim and locate host roots. Heavy rainfall and poorly drained soils significantly increase the incidence and severity of the root rot during the early growing season.

Effective management strategies focus on integrated pest management (IPM) practices. Key approaches include selecting resistant plant varieties, improving soil drainage to minimize waterlogging, and utilizing effective seed treatments. Because the pathogen is soil-borne, sanitation and careful management of field runoff are also essential to prevent the spread of the disease to unaffected areas.
