Phytophthora siskiyouensis is a destructive oomycete pathogen known for causing serious health issues in various woody plant species. This pathogen has a notable impact on species such as the Alnus genus (alders). The disease often spreads through water movement in the soil, allowing zoospores to migrate and infect new root systems. Its ability to persist in the soil environment makes it a persistent threat in both native forests and commercial nurseries.

The characteristic symptoms of a Phytophthora siskiyouensis infection include canopy thinning, chlorosis of the foliage, and dieback of branches. Beneath the bark, localized necrotic lesions form at the collar, often girdling the trunk. These lesions disrupt the plant's vascular system, preventing the transport of water and nutrients from the roots to the upper canopy.

Excessive soil moisture, poor drainage, and warm temperatures significantly accelerate the development of the pathogen.
