Phytophthora stricta is a microscopic oomycete pathogen known for causing severe root and crown rot in susceptible plant hosts. Unlike true fungi, this organism produces motile zoospores that thrive in saturated environments, allowing it to move rapidly through irrigation water or rainwater runoff to infect neighboring plants.
The host range of this pathogen primarily includes specific ornamental species and nursery crops. By targeting the vascular tissues, the pathogen restricts the flow of water and nutrients, which often results in sudden wilting and eventual collapse of the host plant, regardless of the plant's initial vigor.
Symptoms of the infection typically manifest as chlorosis followed by dark, water-soaked lesions near the soil line. As the disease progresses, the root system shows signs of browning and disintegration. In severe cases, the entire root architecture is compromised, making it impossible for the plant to sustain itself under normal environmental conditions.

Environmental conditions that keep the soil consistently wet, combined with moderate temperatures, provide the ideal breeding ground for the pathogen.
