Thermophilic Phytophthora

Phytophthora thermophila is an oomycete pathogen known for its ability to thrive in warmer environmental conditions compared to other members of the Phytophthora genus. This characteristic makes it a significant threat to various plant species, particularly in greenhouse environments or regions with elevated soil temperatures, where it causes severe root rot and decay.

The host range of Phytophthora thermophila includes diverse horticultural crops and woody nursery plants. The pathogen primarily targets the root systems and the lower parts of the stem. By destroying the root architecture, the organism effectively cuts off the plant's supply of essential nutrients and moisture, leading to rapid wilting and eventual death.

Symptoms of the infection typically appear as sudden wilting despite adequate irrigation, stunted growth, and yellowish foliage. A diagnostic sign is the presence of necrotic, water-soaked lesions at the base of the stem or collar rot. Below the surface, roots often exhibit discoloration, becoming mushy or blackened as the tissue degrades due to the pathogen's enzymatic activity.

Development and spread are facilitated by warm, moist soil conditions. The pathogen produces motile zoospores that navigate through wet soil and irrigation water to reach healthy roots. Once established, the pathogen can persist as thick-walled structures in the soil, allowing it to survive adverse periods and re-infect subsequent planting cycles if sanitization measures are neglected.

The damage caused by this pathogen leads to significant economic losses in both commercial and ornamental settings. Integrated management strategies are essential to minimize outbreaks:
