Description

The causative agent of this disease is the oomycete Phytophthora trifolii, a soil-borne pathogen responsible for significant root rot in leguminous crops. This organism is highly specialized, targeting the root systems of clover species and disrupting the plant's vascular integrity from an early developmental stage.

Clover (Trifolium spp.) is the primary host for this pathogen. The disease has a high economic impact, particularly in pasture and hay production, where it leads to reduced plant vigor, biomass loss, and premature stand thinning. In severe cases, the infected patches can become completely devoid of healthy vegetation.

Symptoms initially appear as leaf yellowing, stunting, and wilting during the day, with recovery at night. As the infection progresses, the root system exhibits significant necrosis, with tissues turning brown and soft. In advanced stages, the taproot and fine roots may become completely decayed, leading to the rapid death of the plant.

The development of Phytophthora trifolii is heavily dependent on moisture. Excessive soil moisture, poor drainage, and high humidity are the primary drivers for disease spread. The pathogen thrives in cool to moderate temperatures, producing zoospores that utilize water films to travel between roots in the soil profile.

Integrated management is essential for control. Farmers should prioritize the use of well-drained soils and implement long-term crop rotation cycles to lower the inoculum potential in the field. Cultural practices such as maintaining optimal soil fertility and avoiding over-irrigation can also mitigate the risk. Proper sanitation of machinery is recommended to prevent spreading infected soil to new areas.
