Phytophthora uliginosa is a soil-borne oomycete pathogen responsible for a condition known as marsh phytophthora. It is a specialized organism that thrives in wet, marshy habitats, primarily affecting crops that require high moisture levels. Because of its biology, it is closely related to other Phytophthora species that are notorious for causing significant economic losses in various agricultural sectors.

The primary hosts of this pathogen are members of the Ericaceae family, particularly bog-adapted plants like cranberries. The disease attacks the plant's root system, causing root rot that prevents the plant from absorbing necessary nutrients. When roots are compromised, the plant experiences systemic stress, leading to poor development, reduced yields, and premature death of the entire crop stand.

Symptoms of the infection typically include a progressive browning and necrosis of the root hairs and main roots. Above-ground symptoms manifest as chlorosis (yellowing of the leaves), wilting, and stunting. In advanced stages, dark, water-soaked lesions may appear at the base of the stems, especially under high-humidity conditions, which is a classic indicator of an oomycete-related infection.

The development and spread of Phytophthora uliginosa are highly dependent on environmental factors, specifically water-logged soils and moderate temperatures. The pathogen produces motile zoospores that swim through free water to infect neighboring healthy roots. Therefore, poor drainage or over-irrigation acts as a catalyst for the rapid spread of the disease across a field or plantation.

Effective management requires a multi-faceted approach. Primary control involves improving soil drainage to prevent the standing water that zoospores require for movement. Additionally, cultural practices such as selecting well-drained planting sites and using disease-free stock are crucial. Chemical control using specific oomyceticide fungicides is recommended as an auxiliary measure during high-risk periods.
