Phytophthora urerae is a pathogenic oomycete species responsible for a specific form of blight and rot in plants of the Urera genus. As an aggressive pathogen, it primarily attacks the vascular system of the host, leading to systemic decay. Understanding its biological cycle is essential for any agronomic program aimed at protecting susceptible botanical collections.

The disease is classified as a type of Phytophthora-induced root and stem rot. Upon successful infection, the pathogen colonizes the plant's vascular tissues, effectively blocking the flow of water and nutrients. This structural damage causes the plant to lose its ability to maintain physiological functions, resulting in progressive wilting that often leads to total mortality if untreated.

Typical symptoms manifest as dark, water-soaked lesions appearing on the lower stems, which gradually spread to the petioles and leaf blades. These lesions often show a distinct brown border. Under conditions of high relative humidity, a fuzzy, white growth of sporangia may appear on the necrotic tissue, signaling active sporulation and high risk of spreading to nearby plants.

The pathogen thrives in environments where water is abundant and temperatures are moderate. The zoospores are highly motile in saturated soil, allowing them to swim toward root exudates. Therefore, poor soil drainage, improper irrigation management, and high humidity levels are the primary drivers of the infection, acting as conduits for the spread of Phytophthora urerae.
