Phytophthora vesicula is a significant oomycete pathogen responsible for causing blights and necrotic lesions in various plant species. As a member of the diverse Phytophthora genus, it functions as a hemibiotroph, initially feeding on living tissues before causing extensive cell death and tissue decay.

The biology of this pathogen is closely linked to water availability. It produces motile zoospores that require free moisture, such as dew, rain, or irrigation runoff, to swim and locate new hosts. Once contact is made, the pathogen quickly invades the plant cells, disrupting normal metabolic and physiological processes.

Symptoms typically present as irregular, water-soaked spots on leaves and stems, which rapidly darken to a brown or black color. In favorable conditions, these spots expand into large lesions, leading to leaf drop, stem dieback, and in severe cases, the complete collapse of the plant structure.

The prevalence and spread of the disease are heavily dictated by environmental factors, particularly humidity levels exceeding 85% and cool to moderate temperatures. Poor site selection, inadequate drainage, and crowded planting densities are major contributing factors that facilitate the rapid secondary spread of the infection within a crop.

Effective management requires an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy. Key practices include:

  • Removal and destruction of infected plant debris to reduce inoculum sources.
  • Implementation of proper spacing to improve air circulation.
  • Application of appropriate fungicides in rotation to manage resistance.
  • Maintaining soil drainage to prevent water stagnation.
These efforts, combined with routine monitoring, are crucial to minimizing the damage caused by this aggressive pathogen in agricultural and nursery settings.
