Description
The causative agent of this disease is the soil-borne oomycete Phytopythium litorale, which belongs to the pseudo-fungi group. This microorganism exhibits characteristics of both true fungi and algae, allowing it to reproduce effectively in aquatic environments and moist substrates. The disease is classified as a root rot or seedling blight, as the pathogen primarily attacks the underground parts of the plant.
This pathogen has a wide host range, including both ornamental and vegetable crops. It is frequently encountered in nurseries growing conifers and also affects greenhouse vegetables like cucumbers and tomatoes. While often found in coastal environments, it has become a serious threat to agriculture, particularly where irrigation management is poor or drainage is inadequate.
Symptoms of Phytopythium litorale infection include stunted plant growth, leaf yellowing, and premature wilting. Upon inspection of the root system, characteristic browning and tissue softening are observed, which progress rapidly to total root destruction. Unlike many other types of rot, the affected areas typically have a water-soaked appearance due to the breakdown of cell walls by oomycete enzymes.
The primary driver for disease development and spread is excessive soil moisture and waterlogging in the root zone. The pathogen spreads actively through zoospores, which can move through soil moisture to infect neighboring plants. While temperatures between +15 and +25 degrees Celsius are optimal for growth, high humidity remains the most critical factor in promoting epidemic outbreaks.
The damage caused by Phytopythium leads to a sharp decline in produce quality and massive losses of young seedlings in nursery settings. Due to the hidden nature of root decay, diagnosis is often delayed, resulting in significant economic consequences. In severe cases, mortality rates in planting beds can reach 80 to 100 percent if emergency agronomic interventions are not implemented.
- Ensure proper soil drainage in greenhouses and open fields.
- Use sterilized growing media when propagating seedlings.
- Manage irrigation practices to avoid saturated soil conditions.
- Apply specialized fungicides such as phenylamides or fosetyl-aluminum.
- Practice crop rotation and remove infected plants promptly along with the surrounding root ball soil.
