Description

Pathogen and disease type. Pistachio rust is caused by the obligate fungal pathogen Pileolaria terebinthi. It is a rust fungus (Basidiomycota) that specifically parasitizes plants belonging to the Anacardiaceae family. This pathogen relies entirely on its host to complete its complex biological life cycle, producing various types of spores that allow for effective dispersal.

Host plants. The primary agricultural host is the common pistachio tree (Pistacia vera). The fungus also frequently infects wild pistachio species and turpentine trees (Pistacia terebinthus). It is a significant concern in regions where pistachio cultivation is a staple, particularly across the Mediterranean basin and Central Asia.

Symptoms and signs of infection. The disease manifests as chlorotic lesions on the upper surface of leaves. On the undersides, characteristic brown or reddish-brown uredinia (rust pustules) appear, which release large quantities of spores. In cases of severe infection, leaves turn yellow and drop prematurely, leading to defoliation which can significantly stress the tree during the growing season.

Conditions for development and severity. The pathogen thrives in environments with high relative humidity, frequent dew, or moderate rainfall combined with warm temperatures. Teliospores, which survive on fallen leaf litter, serve as the primary inoculum for the following spring. The economic impact is linked to reduced photosynthetic capacity, which directly results in lower nut quality, smaller kernel size, and reduced overall orchard productivity.

Control and prevention measures. Effective management strategies are essential for maintaining healthy pistachio groves:

  • Implementing strict sanitation practices, including the raking and removal of infected leaf debris after harvest.
  • Pruning branches to improve canopy aeration and decrease humidity around the leaves.
  • Applying targeted fungicidal sprays during periods favorable for spore germination.
  • Monitoring orchard health and providing adequate nutrition to ensure trees can resist infection stress.
