Pilgeriella is a genus of fungi that cause specific fungal diseases in plants, primarily affecting tropical and subtropical woody species. Within the field of phytopathology, this disease is categorized as a leaf-spotting mycosis that disrupts the normal photosynthetic processes and weakens the host plant structure.
The causative agent of the disease is the fungus Pilgeriella perisporioides. This pathogen acts as an obligate parasite, utilizing the nutrients of the host plant to complete its life cycle. It develops specialized structures such as perithecia within the infected leaf tissue, which are the main diagnostic markers for confirming the presence of the pathogen in laboratory settings.
The disease primarily targets leguminous plants and various forest species. The characteristic symptoms include the formation of localized necrotic spots on the leaves, which often develop a chlorotic halo. As the infection progresses, these spots can enlarge, eventually causing the leaves to yellow and drop prematurely.
