Pilobolus is a genus of fungi belonging to the order Mucorales, commonly known as dung cannons due to their explosive spore dispersal mechanism. While primarily coprophilous, meaning they thrive on animal dung, they are frequently found in agricultural settings where organic fertilizers are used. These fungi act as decomposers, and their presence is often an indicator of the high organic content in the soil or growing media.
The biology of Pilobolus is remarkable due to its adaptation for survival. The sporangiophores are phototropic, meaning they grow towards light, allowing the fungus to accurately aim and launch its sporangia onto surrounding vegetation. This strategy ensures the spores are ingested by herbivores, continuing the lifecycle. In a greenhouse environment, this mechanism allows the fungus to spread rapidly across containers and beds.
Crops affected by the presence of Pilobolus are typically those grown in high-organic substrates, such as potting mixes containing fresh manure or improperly composted mulch. While the fungus does not directly parasitize plant tissues, it creates an environment that can be detrimental to root health. The dense mycelial mats can impede aeration, potentially leading to root rot caused by secondary anaerobic conditions.
Signs and symptoms include the appearance of small, transparent, balloon-like structures with dark spore-filled caps on the surface of the soil. When these spores burst, they may leave black spots on leaves, walls, or equipment within a greenhouse, which is often a source of concern for growers. The presence of the fungus is almost always correlated with high moisture and an abundance of undecomposed plant or animal material.
Prevention and protection measures focus on substrate sanitation. Growers should ensure that all compost and manure are fully decomposed before application. Managing humidity levels is crucial; keeping the top layer of the soil dry and improving ventilation will significantly discourage Pilobolus growth. No chemical fungicides are typically recommended, as cultural adjustments are sufficient to manage this non-pathogenic yet intrusive organism.
