Pinnularia is a genus of diatom algae that, while not typically categorized as a plant pathogen, can function as an environmental nuisance in agricultural settings. Under conditions of excessive moisture and light, these organisms form dense surface films on soil or growing media, which can negatively influence the physical and biological properties of the rhizosphere.

These unicellular organisms possess a characteristic silica frustule and proliferate rapidly in damp environments. When conditions are optimal, they colonize the upper layer of the soil surface, resulting in a physical barrier that restricts gas exchange and disrupts the water infiltration capacity, often leading to soil compaction issues.

The primary crops affected are those cultivated in greenhouses, nurseries, and indoor plant setups. Symptoms include the emergence of a brownish or greenish crust on the soil surface, which can interfere with seed germination and restrict the development of young seedling roots, potentially leading to stunted growth.

The development of Pinnularia is driven by persistent high moisture levels, poor drainage, and high light intensity in the root zone area. It is frequently observed in substrates that are kept constantly wet, often exacerbated by water sources high in mineral salts which provide a nutrient-rich environment for the algae to thrive.

Management strategies focus on cultural control rather than chemical interventions. Key measures include optimizing irrigation schedules to allow the soil surface to dry out between watering cycles, regular cultivation to break up the surface crust, improving ventilation to lower humidity, and using light-blocking mulches to deprive the algae of the sunlight needed for photosynthesis.
