Pinnularia viridis is a common species of diatomaceous algae that, while not a parasitic pathogen in the traditional sense, acts as a biological contaminant in modern agricultural systems. It is primarily observed in hydroponics, aquaponics, and irrigation pipelines where it disrupts normal operational cycles.

The organism belongs to the class Bacillariophyceae. Its presence is characterized by rapid colonial growth, which creates biofilms on surfaces. In hydroponic setups, these films settle on roots and equipment, effectively competing with crops for dissolved nutrients and obstructing gas exchange, which can lead to plant stress.

Symptoms of an infestation are marked by the appearance of brownish-green slippery deposits on surfaces exposed to light. Crops often display signs of nutritional deficiency despite adequate fertilizer application, as the algae layer on the root surface acts as a physical barrier to ion uptake, slowing down the plant's metabolic processes.

The development of this diatom is favored by high levels of phosphorus and nitrogen in the water, combined with consistent light exposure. In greenhouse settings, the environment is often ideal for its growth, especially if technical equipment allows for light penetration into the nutrient solution tanks or transparent tubing.

Effective management strategies focus on preventing the algae from thriving. This includes the use of opaque tank covers to eliminate light, installation of UV-C sterilizers in water recycling systems, and strict sanitation protocols. Periodic flushing of the irrigation lines with peroxide-based solutions is recommended to maintain optimal plant health.
