The biology of Piptocephalis involves the formation of specialized structures that penetrate the hyphae of the host fungus. By absorbing nutrients directly from the host's cytoplasm, it inhibits the growth and sporulation of the primary plant pathogen. This makes it an interesting subject for studies on biological control within agroecosystems.
This fungus can be found on a wide range of crops that are suffering from fungal diseases. Whenever a susceptible plant shows signs of fungal infection, such as white surface mold, Piptocephalis may colonize these patches to utilize the existing fungal growth as a substrate.
