Pithomyces is a genus of fungi that can cause significant agricultural concerns, primarily due to the production of the mycotoxin sporidesmin by the species Pithomyces chartarum. This fungus is widely distributed globally and exists primarily as a saprophyte, colonizing dead plant material and organic debris.

Host plants typically include a wide range of pasture grasses, clovers, and field crops. The fungus thrives on decaying plant matter found at the base of the sward. While it does not kill the host plant directly, its presence is a major concern for livestock industries because the spores, when ingested, cause liver damage and facial eczema in grazing animals.

Symptoms of Pithomyces presence in a field are often subtle to the naked eye, appearing as a dark, sooty growth on decaying leaves and grass litter. The diagnostic signs are more apparent in animal health, showing clear symptoms of secondary photosensitization, such as skin irritation, swelling, and lesions after exposure to sunlight, caused by the hepatic damage from the toxin.

The development and spread of the fungus are highly dependent on warm and humid conditions. Optimal growth occurs when minimum daily temperatures exceed 12°C and humidity is consistently high. Spore production increases rapidly following significant rainfall events, especially when these follow a period of dry weather, allowing the fungus to bloom on the accumulated litter.

Effective management requires a proactive approach to prevent animal ingestion and control fungal population densities. The following strategies are essential for mitigation:

  • Maintaining proper pasture height to reduce the accumulation of decaying litter.
  • Using fungicide applications on pastures during high-risk climate periods.
  • Implementing regular spore count monitoring programs to assess toxicity levels.
  • Utilizing zinc supplementation for livestock to provide protection against sporidesmin.
