While widely studied in cereal crops under names like rice blast, its impact on banana cultivation is characterized by distinct necrotic lesions on leaves and fruit skin.
The disease primarily targets the Musa genus. It disrupts the plant's metabolic processes and compromises the physical integrity of the banana fruit, which is particularly detrimental for commercial export markets where cosmetic appearance is a key standard for quality control.
Symptoms typically manifest as small, circular, sunken lesions on the fruit peel or foliage, which may eventually coalesce into larger irregular patches.
