Placynthiaceae is a family of lichens rather than a plant disease. These organisms are biological symbioses formed by fungi and photosynthetic partners. In an agricultural context, they are strictly epiphytic, meaning they grow on the surface of plants such as tree bark or rocks, without invading living tissues or extracting nutrients from the host plant.
These lichens do not act as disease pathogens and do not cause necrotic lesions, chlorosis, or any physiological disorders in cultivated trees. Their presence on branches or trunks is purely superficial and should not be confused with fungal infections like canker, rust, or scab, which penetrate plant structures and destroy cells.
The symptoms of their presence typically appear as crustose or squamulose thalli, which may vary in texture and color from grey to brown or greenish. These formations are firmly attached to the substrate. Farmers often mistake this natural cover for a sign of decay, but in reality, it is a sign of ecological stability and the absence of air pollution.
The development of these organisms is highly dependent on ambient humidity, sufficient light exposure, and the quality of the air. They are highly sensitive to industrial pollution, particularly sulfur dioxide. Consequently, finding Placynthiaceae in an orchard suggests that the environment is clean and free from significant chemical stress, making them valuable bioindicators.
No protective measures are required, as these lichens do not threaten the health of the plant or the yield. Preventive care is limited to standard orchard sanitation. If the coverage becomes excessive, a simple brushing of the tree bark can be performed to remove old, dead bark layers, which helps improve tree vigor and reduces potential hiding spots for common pests.
