Placynthium is a genus of crustose lichens that frequently colonize the bark of fruit and ornamental trees. While they do not directly parasitize the tree's vascular system, their extensive growth is often considered an indicator of poor tree vigor, high environmental humidity, and a lack of proper orchard maintenance. In the context of arboriculture, they are recognized as epiphytes that require management.

These lichens primarily affect fruit-bearing species, including apple, pear, and plum trees. They are especially common in mature orchards where bark texture becomes rough and weathered over time. The lichen attaches itself firmly to the bark surface, absorbing water and nutrients from the atmosphere rather than from the tree itself, yet its presence alters the micro-environment of the bark.

Symptoms of Placynthium include the appearance of dark gray, brown, or black crusty patches on the stems and branches. These patches are often granular or squamulose in texture. Over time, as the colony expands, it may cause the bark to retain excessive moisture, which potentially weakens the protective barrier of the tree and creates an entry point for wood-decaying fungi and insects.

The development and spread of Placynthium are strictly dictated by environmental conditions, particularly high atmospheric humidity, shaded environments, and poor air circulation. It thrives in neglected orchards where dense canopy growth blocks sunlight from reaching the trunk and major branches, thereby maintaining a cool, damp micro-climate that is ideal for lichen colonization.

Control measures and prevention are essential for maintaining a healthy orchard. The most effective methods include mechanical cleaning of the bark with stiff brushes to remove the growth, followed by treatment with copper-based fungicides or limewash. Improving orchard hygiene through regular pruning to enhance light penetration and airflow is the most sustainable long-term strategy for preventing the return of these organisms.
