The biological nature of this organism is a symbiotic relationship between a fungus and Nostoc cyanobacteria. The thallus is typically black or dark grey, forming a granular or scale-like crust. Unlike parasitic fungi, it does not penetrate the host's living tissues, but its continuous growth covers the bark and affects the plant's physiological surface environment.

It thrives in humid, shaded environments where air circulation is restricted.
