Planistromellosis is a group of fungal plant diseases caused by micromycetes belonging to the Planistromellaceae family (order Botryosphaeriales). These ascomycetes are characterized by the development of stromata — specific fungal structures that grow within host plant tissues, causing significant structural damage and disrupting normal physiological functions.

This pathogen complex primarily affects woody plants, including trees and shrubs. The fungi typically invade plant tissues through stomata or minor mechanical wounds on the epidermis. Once inside, the mycelium colonizes the intracellular spaces, which eventually leads to weakening of the host and reduced resilience against environmental stressors.

The characteristic symptoms include the appearance of necrotic spots, often irregular in shape and surrounded by a chlorotic halo. Over time, distinctive dark, slightly protruding stromata develop within these necrotic areas, breaking through the epidermis. Severe infections result in premature defoliation, twig dieback, and a general decline in the plant's health and vigor.

The development and dissemination of the disease are heavily influenced by environmental factors such as humidity and temperature. Spores are primarily spread by rain splashes, wind, and insects, especially during warm and humid weather conditions. The pathogen can survive for long periods in fallen leaves and dead plant debris, providing an inoculum source for the following growing season.

Control strategies involve an integrated approach focusing on sanitation and chemical intervention. Recommended measures include:

  • Prompt removal and destruction of infected twigs and branches.
  • Thorough cleanup and disposal of leaf litter.
  • Application of copper-based or systemic fungicides during critical infection periods.
  • Maintaining optimal plant vigor through proper nutrition and irrigation.
  • Effective management requires consistent monitoring of plantations during the growing season. Early detection of necrotic symptoms is crucial for preventing the widespread establishment of the disease in nurseries and orchards, ensuring the long-term health and productivity of the cultivated crops.
