Description
Plasmopara obducens is a destructive oomycete pathogen responsible for downy mildew in Impatiens species. This disease has caused significant economic losses in the ornamental plant industry, particularly affecting the popular bedding plant Impatiens walleriana, which is highly susceptible to the infection.
Symptoms typically begin with yellowing or stippling on the foliage. As the infection progresses, a white, fuzzy fungal growth appears on the undersides of the leaves, consisting of sporangia. Eventually, infected plants experience severe leaf drop, leaving bare stems, which leads to total plant collapse.
The development of the disease is strictly dependent on environmental conditions, particularly cool temperatures and high humidity. Leaf wetness caused by irrigation, rainfall, or heavy dew is essential for the germination of spores and the subsequent spread of the pathogen throughout the planting area.
The harmfulness of Plasmopara obducens is critical because it is a fast-spreading disease that can devastate an entire landscape or greenhouse collection in a very short time. Furthermore, the presence of oospores in the soil makes it extremely difficult to eradicate the pathogen from infected sites.
Effective management strategies require an integrated approach:
