The causative agent of the disease is the oomycete Plasmopara petroselini, which is responsible for downy mildew in parsley. This pathogen is a host-specific parasite that focuses its activity on parsley and other related Apiaceae species, posing a serious threat to both commercial and garden cultivations.

The crop primarily affected by this pathogen is common parsley (Petroselinum crispum). The disease can infect plants at any growth stage, but it is particularly destructive during periods of rapid leaf production when the density of the foliage creates a favorable microclimate for the fungus.

Symptoms of the infection typically appear as chlorotic, yellowing spots on the upper leaf surface, which eventually progress into necrotic brown patches. In humid conditions, a characteristic greyish-white downy growth, consisting of sporangiophores, develops on the undersides of the infected leaves.

Environmental conditions play a crucial role in the development of the disease. Plasmopara petroselini thrives in cool, moist environments with temperatures between 15°C and 20°C. High humidity and the presence of surface water on the leaves are essential for the germination of zoospores and the initiation of new infection cycles.
