The disease is caused by the fungus Plectosphaerella alismatis, a widespread plant pathogen belonging to the Ascomycota phylum. It acts as a soil-borne or seed-borne agent that compromises the vascular system and cellular integrity of its host, leading to various forms of plant decline.

A wide range of plant species are susceptible to this pathogen, particularly horticultural crops and various ornamental plants. It is frequently observed in greenhouse environments, where it causes significant damage to stems, leaves, and root structures, often resulting in vascular wilt and stunted development.
