Plectosphaerella blight is a fungal disease caused by the soil-borne pathogen Plectosphaerella citrulli. This pathogen is increasingly recognized as a major threat to cucurbit production, causing root rot, stem lesions, and systemic collapse of the host plant.

The primary hosts for this fungus include watermelons, melons, cucumbers, and pumpkins. It is particularly devastating in intensive greenhouse operations, where environmental conditions can be manipulated to favor the rapid growth and sporulation of the fungus, leading to significant economic losses.

Symptoms typically begin as small, water-soaked spots on stems, leaves, or roots. These lesions rapidly darken to brown or black, becoming necrotic and often causing the stem to collapse. In severe cases, the entire plant wilts and dies within a few days of the initial visible symptoms appearing.

The development of Plectosphaerella citrulli is highly dependent on humidity and soil moisture. It thrives in moist, warm conditions and is easily disseminated through contaminated soil, irrigation water, and infected plant debris left in the field or greenhouse after the harvest.

Effective management strategies rely on integrated pest management (IPM) practices. Key steps include the removal of infected plant tissues, proper soil solarization or chemical disinfection of substrates, and strict control of humidity levels. Crop rotation is essential to prevent the buildup of the pathogen in the soil, and the application of fungicides may be necessary during periods of high disease pressure.
