Description
The disease is caused by the pathogenic fungus Plectosphaerella plurivora, a member of the ascomycetes class. This organism acts as a vascular and tissue pathogen, penetrating plant structures and disrupting the flow of water and nutrients. It is recognized as a significant emerging threat, particularly in intensive cultivation systems where conditions favour fungal proliferation.
The host range of Plectosphaerella plurivora is remarkably broad, affecting various economically important vegetables. Crops such as tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, and various leafy greens are highly susceptible. The pathogen can attack plants at any phenological stage, causing seedling blight, root lesions, and general decline of mature, fruit-bearing plants.
Characteristic symptoms usually appear as water-soaked lesions at the base of the stem or on the root system. As the infection progresses, these areas turn brown and necrotic. Affected plants often exhibit wilting symptoms during the warmest part of the day, which initially recover at night, but eventually lead to permanent wilting and death of the plant due to complete root system failure.

High humidity, warm temperatures, and waterlogged soils provide an ideal habitat for the spores of the fungus. Furthermore, poor greenhouse sanitation, contaminated tools, and infected irrigation water can lead to rapid spread within a facility, turning localized infections into a full-scale outbreak.
The potential damage from Plectosphaerella plurivora can lead to significant yield losses if not managed promptly. Effective prevention focuses on integrated pest management (IPM) strategies, including soil sterilization, the removal and destruction of crop residues, and the use of healthy, pathogen-free transplants. Biological control agents like Trichoderma species have shown promise in suppressing the pathogen when applied at early stages.
