Plectosphaerella ramiseptata is a soil-borne fungal pathogen recognized for causing severe root and crown rot in various agricultural crops. As an ascomycete fungus, it exhibits high tenacity, surviving in the soil or on decaying plant debris for extended periods in the form of chlamydospores, making it a persistent threat to agricultural production.

Vegetable crops, particularly tomatoes, cucumbers, and peppers, are among the most susceptible to this infection. The fungus primarily targets the root system and the lower stem region. Once the pathogen breaches the protective tissues of the roots, it colonizes the vascular system, effectively hindering the upward movement of water and essential nutrients.

Visual symptoms often manifest as discolored, necrotic roots and distinct brown lesions on the stem near the soil line. Above ground, the disease presents as wilting, chlorosis (yellowing of leaves), and stunted growth. Infected plants typically fail to recover from wilting even after irrigation, indicating severe damage to the plant's hydraulic integrity.

The development and spread of Plectosphaerella ramiseptata are significantly enhanced by high soil moisture levels and moderate ambient temperatures. The fungus can easily disseminate through irrigation runoff, contaminated agricultural machinery, infected nursery transplants, and soil movement between fields or within greenhouse compartments.

The impact of this disease can be devastating, leading to significant yield reduction and loss of marketability of the produce. To manage and mitigate this risk, farmers should focus on an integrated approach:

  • implementing strict crop rotation cycles;
  • utilizing sterilized growing media and disease-free seedlings;
  • improving field drainage to prevent waterlogging;
  • applying biological control agents such as Trichoderma species.
