Description

Plectosphaerellaceae is a family of ascomycetous fungi that includes several dangerous phytopathogens causing severe diseases in agricultural crops. These fungi are widely distributed in the soil and can infect both underground organs and aerial parts of plants, often causing wilting and necrotic processes.

The primary pathogens within this family include species of the genera Plectosphaerella, Verticillium (in a broad taxonomic sense), and Gibellulopsis. The diseases caused by these fungi are classified as vascular wilts, root rots, and leaf spots, making them highly damaging to agroecosystem productivity.

The most susceptible crops include vegetables (cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers, eggplants), cucurbits, and various field crops such as soybeans and sunflowers. These pathogens can persist in the soil for a long time as chlamydospores or sclerotia, significantly complicating crop rotation planning.

Infection development is favored by high soil moisture and moderate ambient temperatures. The fungus enters the plant through the root system, damaged by pests or mechanical stress, after which the mycelium rapidly colonizes the xylem, blocking the transport of water and nutrients, leading to sudden plant death.

Control measures involve an integrated approach: using healthy seed material, following proper crop rotation by excluding susceptible species, and ensuring high-quality soil management. While broad-spectrum fungicides are used to protect crops, prevention and the cultivation of resistant varieties remain the primary management strategies.
