Pleiochaeta is a genus of fungi containing the plant pathogen Pleiochaeta setosa, which is responsible for severe leaf spot and root rot diseases. This fungus is a significant threat in agricultural production, particularly for legumes such as lupines. It survives in the soil as a saprophyte or resting structure, waiting for suitable conditions to infect new host plants.
The host range of Pleiochaeta setosa is primarily centered on lupine species, although other leguminous crops can be susceptible. The economic impact is substantial, as the infection can cause seedling blight, leading to thin crop stands and significant reductions in total grain and biomass yield if left untreated.
Symptoms of infection manifest as irregular dark brown or black lesions on the hypocotyls and taproots of young plants. As the plant matures, the foliage develops characteristic necrotic spots with distinct dark margins. In severe cases, the leaflets curl, turn brown, and drop prematurely, resulting in defoliation that weakens the plant's overall vigor.
The development of the disease is highly dependent on environmental factors, specifically cool and moist conditions. Pleiochaeta thrives when soil temperatures are moderate and humidity levels remain high, facilitating the rapid production of conidia. Continuous cropping of susceptible plants creates a high inoculum load in the soil, making it increasingly difficult to manage without rigorous crop rotation.
Managing this disease requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach to minimize the impact on crop yields:
- Practicing long-term crop rotation to break the pathogen's life cycle.
- Treating seeds with appropriate systemic fungicides before planting.
- Ensuring proper soil drainage to avoid waterlogged conditions.
- Removing and destroying infected crop residues after harvest.
- Selecting resistant or tolerant plant cultivars whenever available.
