Pleistophorosis is a specific plant disease caused by internal parasites belonging to the genus Pleistophora, which are classified as microsporidia. While these pathogens are frequently discussed in the context of biological studies of aquatic organisms, their impact on aquatic plants and specific agricultural systems can lead to significant physiological stress and growth inhibition.

The causative agent of this condition is a spore-forming protozoan that functions as an obligate intracellular parasite. By colonizing the host's cells, the pathogen diverts nutrients for its own reproduction, leading to the formation of extensive spore masses. This parasitic activity compromises the host plant’s ability to perform essential metabolic functions, eventually leading to cellular decline.

Symptoms of infection are often subtle but include stunted growth, general chlorosis, and structural deformation of the plant tissues. As the infection progresses, the vascular system may be affected, leading to wilting or localized tissue necrosis. Because these symptoms resemble various nutritional deficiencies or other pathogens, accurate laboratory diagnosis is essential for confirmation.

The development and transmission of the disease are heavily influenced by environmental moisture levels. High humidity or direct contact with water facilitates the movement of infectious spores from host to host. Consequently, crops grown in high-moisture environments or hydroponic settings are at higher risk if containment protocols are not strictly followed.

Protection and preventive measures are focused on containment and environmental management, as direct treatment of systemic microsporidian infections is limited. Recommended practices include:
