The causal agent of Phoma leaf spot and stem necrosis in sunflowers is the fungus Plenodomus agnitus. This pathogen is a widespread fungal organism that thrives in agricultural fields where sunflower crops are cultivated continuously. The fungus overwinters in infected crop debris, forming pycnidia that release infectious spores during the following growing season.
This disease primarily targets the sunflower plant (Helianthus annuus), affecting various parts of the crop including the foliage, petioles, and stems. While it is host-specific to certain members of the Asteraceae family, the economic impact is most pronounced in commercial sunflower farming, where it can cause significant yield loss if left unmanaged.
