Plenodomus congestus is a fungal plant pathogen known to cause significant diseases in various members of the Brassicaceae family. It is recognized as a specific threat to cruciferous crops, impacting plant health and quality by colonizing host tissues and disrupting normal nutrient and water transport systems.
The host range of this fungus primarily includes cultivated brassicas such as cabbage, radish, and canola, as well as various wild cruciferous weeds. The pathogen can attack seedlings and mature plants alike, with its severity often dictated by the physiological state of the host and environmental pressure at the time of infection.
Symptoms are characterized by the development of leaf spots or stem lesions, which eventually display the diagnostic presence of pycnidia—small, black, fruiting bodies of the fungus. As the disease progresses, these lesions can cause tissue necrosis, wilting, and, in severe cases, the collapse of the plant due to root rot or stem weakness.
The development and spread of Plenodomus congestus are heavily favored by high relative humidity, moderate temperatures, and persistent moisture on leaf surfaces.
