Description
Plenodomus visci is a specific fungal pathogen responsible for causing disease in mistletoe species. As a specialized fungus, it primarily targets the tissues of Viscum album (white mistletoe), acting as a natural antagonist to this hemi-parasitic plant that affects a wide variety of deciduous trees.
The primary host for this pathogen is the mistletoe. In forestry and horticulture, the role of Plenodomus visci is significant because it contributes to the biological control of mistletoe populations, which are often considered pests due to the stress they place on their host trees.
The infection manifests through typical symptoms such as the development of necrotic lesions and cankers on the stems and leaves of the mistletoe plant. Small black pycnidia, which are the fruiting bodies of the fungus, emerge through the epidermis of the infected host. This eventually leads to the wilting, dieback, and death of the infected mistletoe parts.
The spread of the disease is highly dependent on environmental conditions, particularly high humidity and sufficient rainfall. Rain splash and wind are the primary vectors for the dissemination of fungal spores between mistletoe individuals. These conditions facilitate the colonization of new tissues, particularly during the growing season.
Management of this condition focuses on integrated orchard and forest maintenance practices rather than direct fungicide application.
